Book Launch: KALIDAS – Alluvial Soul, Soil, Symbol

On the evening of 16 February 2025, Bengal Foundation hosted the launch of KALIDAS: Alluvial Soul, Soil, Symbol, a comprehensive monograph celebrating the life and artistic legacy of the eminent Bangladeshi artist Kalidas Karmakar (1946–2019). The event took place at Bengal Shilpalay, Level 7, Dhanmondi, Dhaka, marking a memorable occasion in honour of one of Bangladesh’s most influential contemporary artists.

Published by ARTCON, the monograph offers an in-depth exploration of Kalidas Karmakar’s creative evolution, his philosophical reflections on nature and freedom, and his profound impact on the visual art landscape of Bangladesh.

The evening began with the screening of the documentary film “Kalidas Karmakar: Portrait of an Alluvial Artist”, produced by Bengal Foundation, setting the tone for an event filled with reflection, art, and remembrance.

Kanka Karmakar, elder daughter of the artist, shared the story behind the making of the book with ARTCON and recounted cherished memories of her father, offering the audience a deeply personal glimpse into his creative world.

The launch event brought together leading figures from Bangladesh’s cultural and academic communities. Mr. Enayetullah Khan, Chairman of Cosmos Foundation and the Bay of Bengal Institute, reflected on Kalidas Karmakar’s artistic contributions. Dr. Rubana Huq, Vice-Chancellor of the Asian University for Women, spoke passionately about his enduring influence on the nation’s creative identity. Art writer Mr. Moinuddin Khaled enriched the discussion with his critical insights into Karmakar’s symbolism and artistic philosophy.

Mr. Farooq Sobhan, Distinguished Fellow and Board Member of the Bangladesh Enterprise Institute, chaired the event, while Ms. Luva Nahid Choudhury, Director General of Bengal Foundation, presided over the ceremony with her distinguished presence.

ARTCON founder ARK Reepon formally presented and unveiled the book to the distinguished guests and audience, symbolizing the culmination of years of dedication to preserving Kalidas Karmakar’s legacy.
