AKM Alamgir Huque

A K M Alamgir Huque (b. 1953, Dhaka, Bangladesh) is a distinguished contemporary painter and printmaker whose work bridges South Asian modernism and international abstraction. A graduate of the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka, Huque also earned an MFA in Graphic Printmaking from M.S. University of Baroda, India, under an India-Bangladesh Cultural Exchange Programme. His practice spans painting, etching, aquatint, and waterless lithography, showcasing a mastery of form, texture, and spatial composition.

Huque's works are known for their richly layered surfaces, geometric structures, and subtle tonalities. Drawing inspiration from both the natural landscapes of Bangladesh and the expansive vistas of the Canadian Prairies, where he has lived and worked since 1990, his art explores themes of memory, time, and the elemental forces of nature. Through abstraction, he creates meditative spaces that are both visually dynamic and contemplatively quiet.

Over his career, Huque has exhibited widely in Bangladesh, India, Canada, Japan, and Europe, including solo shows at Bengal Gallery of Fine Arts, Dhaka, and Ken Segal Gallery, Winnipeg. His awards include the International Award, Mini Prints International, Barcelona (1995) and the Saskatchewan Arts Board Individual Assistance Grant (2000). His works are held in important public and private collections and continue to influence a new generation of printmakers.

Huque's practice exemplifies a cross-cultural dialogue that unites his South Asian roots with a global perspective, positioning him as a vital voice in contemporary printmaking and abstraction.
